This post started out as your typical books versus ebooks article, aimed at trying to find out if ebooks are cheaper than traditional books. But, it soon became quite clear that not only are they less expensive, but also more practical in a lot of aspects. So the aim has changed to establishing the reasons behind why you will eventually switch to ebooks.
Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love real books, as a matter of fact, I haven’t personally made the transition yet. But it has become quite clear to me, from a strictly practical point of view, that this conversion is inevitable. Want to know why? Check out the rest of this post to find out.
The Reasons Behind Why You Will Switch for eBooks
An entire library can fit in a single electronic device, saving people money in terms of storage space and furniture;
These devices are often incredibly portable, easily fitting in a backpack or purse. This is great for crowded environments;
eReaders often have all sorts of cool functions that let readers select fonts, size and layout as well as read in the dark;
eBooks are generally cheaper than normal books. A lot cheaper to produce, digital titles usually cost about $1 to $2 less than their traditional counterparts. Some people claim that they could be even cheaper as they become the norm;
They are also often more accessible. It doesn’t matter if people are at home, work, on vacation, in public transit or waiting in line at the local coffee shop, they can effortlessly purchase new titles from virtually anywhere on websites like Kobobooks.com or Amazon.ca.
The Bottom Line
Of course, there are still some ways to enjoy traditional books without having to pay too much for them–that’s a whole different story though. The reasons I see that would push people to read paperbacks are a bit sentimental. The satisfaction of discovering a new novel: holding it in your hands, rapidly going through the first pages, enjoying the new book smell as well as sharing it with friends are all things that contribute to creating the real book experience. But in the end, most people aren’t purists and ebooks are simply much more practical.
How about you? What do you think? Have you made the Switch? What device do you use?
